Logitech Communicator STX problems

Post by givehimagun »

I've been searching for answers on the forum for two days and have not been able to decipher and fix my issue. I currently have Fedora 11 64bit and want to use a Logitech Communicator STX connected via USB.

I am able to see and use the camera in Cheese and Camstreams without a problem, but cannot see the camera inside of Zoneminder.

When I type lsusb I get:

Code: Select all

Bus 007 Device 002: ID 046d:08d7 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Communicate STX
I can use ZMU only when I add the -V 1 parameter (I saw this on the forum somewhere):

Code: Select all

[root@hatter ~]# zmu -d /dev/video1 -q -v -V 1
Video Device: /dev/video1
Video Capabilities
  Name: USB Camera (046d:08d7)
  Type: 1

  Audio Channels: 0

  Maximum Height: 480
  Minimum Width: 48
  Minimum Height: 32

  Whiteness: 39321
Channel 0 Attributes
  Name: zc3xx
  Channel: 0
  Flags: 0
  Type: 2 - Camera
  Format: 0 - PAL
I've entered all of these values into ZoneMinder :

Code: Select all

Device Path /dev/video1
Capture Method V4L version 1
Device Channel 0
Device Format PAL
Capture Palette RGB24
Capture Width 320
Capture Height 240
Solutions Tried
I've added the preload V4L libraries to my /usr/bin/zmdc.pl.
I've chmod zmfix.
I've increased my shared memory size and restarted Fedora.

Bump.

Any ideas on where I can look? I've gone as far as installing Fedora 12 to see if there were any problems with my configuration. No go still.

I have exactly the same cam and other logitechs.. (046d:08d*) They all use zc3xx driver and they do not work with zoneminder for some odd reason.

They work with xawtv and motion.. but for some reason not with zoneminder.

So I traded webcams with my dad and found out that 046d:08c5 works perfectly well with Zoneminder. I think the problem lies with Zoneminder's non-UVC camera support.

With my 08d7, I can get some snow and fuzzy bars to appear but thats about it.

Any ideas which cams are non-UVC and which are not? :)

I have 6 logitechs and they're all 046d:08d* .. I like Zoneminder and I'm going to buy new ones but it would be nice to know which usb-cams actually work with ZM and which does not.

I had these cams with ubuntu 8.04 and zm1.22-1.23 and everything worked nicely. Tho back then my cams used gspca driver.. With ubuntu 8.10 and later I've been forced to use Motion..

Just for the record, I can use a Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 (version2) at up to 1600x1200 at 5fps, using zm 1.24.2 on Ubuntu Server 9.04, with no problems. There were 4 versions of the Quickcam Pro 9000 webcam, now upgraded to Logitech Webcam Pro 9000.

Source:
Device Path: /dev/video0
Capture Method: Video for Linux 2
Device Channel: 0
Device Format: PAL
Capture Palette: YUYV
Capture Width: 1600
Capture Height: 1200
Preserve Aspect Ratio: No
Orientation: Normal

Remember that some Logitech cameras are buggy under Linux. Check for compatiblity here:

And here is the Logitech UVC Frame format list:

Thnx for those links.. Now I know for sure that for some reason my logitechs do not work with ZoneMinder anymore :(

Quickcam Pro 9000 is a much newer cam than my cams.. it's 046d:099* and there's no reason why it should not work with ZM.

My cams are not buggy with linux, because they work with every other prog that I've tried except ZoneMinder. They're just not "UVC compatible" or some other cr*p like that... :(

Multiple Cams?

Post by dcbour »

One problem I found with my USB cameras is they were particular in the sequence they are listed. By deleting all cameras, then adding them back to the monitor as they appear using the /dev/video0, /dev/video1...etc...now, I can see them all. Don't know why yet but spent way too much time trying to get to that and stumbled across it by accident...but found if I delete them, put them back in the wrong order, they will fail.
Don't know the impact on card based video though..awaiting delivery of my card to see if it shows the same issues.
