apt-get or from source?

I am about to reinstall my server and zoneminder. I will be using Ubuntu 9.10 (or even 10.04) and have so far followed one of the numerous guides to install ZM from source.

I was wondering what advantage, if any, this gives me over installing via apt-get. As I see it, apt-get gives me the massive advantage of usig apt-get remove if it all goes wrong, where as from source means I have all sorts of problems starting again.

My latest problem having installed from source was that when I then installed XBMC I had all sorts of conflicts and ZM will no longer start!
