two webcam work on linux, not in zoneminder

I have the last update for ubuntu. I just installed zoneminder, following directions for .deb in wiki. I made all the changes requested AND the program/libraries startup ok.. BIG problem is no camera will work!

I have a netbook (gateway) and using built in, I also have a logitech orbit, and a M$ LifeCam VX-2000. All work fine in vlc, xawtv, cheese but none work in zoneminder.

I added them in zoneminder AND they are showing green, but when I open the window for "preview" there is nada just controls and zoom. Black screen in IE, the video applet is collapsed in Firefox.

There are no errors in /var/logs/ and I can't see any other reason for it. xawtv, vlc all work fine. The system sees it plugged in. Are there limitations on UVC/Usb cameras for one? Or perhaps my permissions are incorrect? I don't want to play until I have a probable cause.

Have you increased the shared memory? Wiki -> Faq -> "shmall"

yes, everything asked for via instructions for .deb. I even checked the ffmpeg directory, and downloaded the .jar file into zoneminder's directory.
