JPG and MPEG for recording

I am using Zoneminder 1.24X on Ubuntu and want the convenience of being able to record using mpeg instead of jpeg. When I going into options and switch the settings under image from jpeg to mpeg and I use the format mpeg,mpg and mov it doesn't work but if I change the format to avi it works but the recording and what you see live on the screen are delayed. What will cause Zoneminder to due that?

ZM converts mpeg streams into jpgs for analysis and storage anyway, so there's no real convenience to recording in mpeg, in fact there's sometimes a significant performance hit.

If you camera does jpg or mjpeg, i recommend you stick with those.
