CPU / RAM 64 bit 32 Bit ?

Post by tibetfreedom »

Hi,

I have two logic boards I could use,

One has a possible FSB speed of 800 + can take 2GB RAM Possible 2 GHZ Intel core 2 processor

The other 1600 FSB speed + can take 8GB RAM Possible 3GHz core 2 Duo

I was going to have an 8 Channel Capture card and 5 camera's all on motion detect and I want to view over the internet.

Which system is better, will the first be OK & are there any benefits to 64Bit ? Thanks.

Assuming by logic board you mean motherboard?

If so, isn't this a simple question? Faster = better. More ram = better. Latter board seems to win for both.

As for 32-bit or 64-bit that's less clear. Some think you need to use 64-bit if you have more than 3.5gb of ram, but bigmem 32-bit kernels can cope with this. You'll need to do some research on which is quicker; 64 is slower than 32 for many things, but whether that's also true for a 32-bit bigmem kernel, I don't know, sorry. My gut feeling is there probably isn't a great deal of difference.

64-bit is now quite mature and nearly everything runs on it - with the exception of some closed-source software.

There accely is quite a difference in AMD atholons and core dues thous are the ones it have tried. Mysql and Apache play much nicer on 64.

Another thing that helps a lot is getting a motherboard that supports ecc ram (the lag time on Apache seams to disappear.) It only on server motherboard.
