Why is the image from my color camera appearing in black and white?

This may occur if you have a NTSC analog camera but have configured the source in ZoneMinder as PAL for the Device Format under the source tab. You may also be mislead because zmu can report the video port as being PAL when the camera is actually NTSC. Confirm the format of your analog camera by checking it's technical specifications, possibly found with the packaging it came in, on the manufacturers website, or even on the retail website where you purchased the camera. Change the Device Format setting to NTSC and set it to the lowest resolution of 320 x 240. If you have confirmed that the camera itself is NTSC format, but don't get a picture using the NTSC setting, consider increasing the shared memory kernel.shmall and kernel.shmmax settings in /etc/sysctl.conf to a larger value such as 268435456. This is also the reason you should start with the 320x240 resolution, so as to minimize the potential of memory problems which would interfere with your attempts to troubleshoot the device format issue. Once you have obtained a picture in the monitor using the NTSC format, then you can experiment with raising the resolution.

The same problem - lack of colors

Post by sebix »

Hello friends,

In a short introduction, my name is Sebi and I'm from Romania.
I'm using Zoneminder from just one week ago so I'm a beginner.
I looking for your help to setup a small home video security system.

My setup is:
- a linux debian lenny box with P3 1Gz and 512 RAM
- an Pico capture card with 4 ports and BT878a chip
- 2 cctv color video cameras (both: CCD sensor, PAL standard)
- dedicated 12V power supply
obs. i run both cctv signal and power through utp cable (on separate pairs) with 2 video baloon devices.

In ZM, Monitor-Source tab I have the following settings:
- video for linux version 2
- device channel: 0
- device format: PAN Nc
- capture palette: GREY
- image size: 320 x 240

The problem is giving head ache for me is like for tibetfreedom the lack of color.

I can connect successfully on ZM web admin page (locally and remotely-with cambozola) and after a lot of "try-and-error" choices a have an stable, clear but only in grey scale image.

The same settings but with BGR24 or YUYV for capture palette gave me the same stable and grey image.

I also checked for colors with another application XAWTV but unfortunately without success.

Also I have followed clipo's advices but until now no color.
Any other suggestion please.

ps. sorry for my English, isn't my native language.

Thanks with anticipation for your help.
