Sharing My Setup with VMWare

Post by jeramiah1945 »

Just thought I would share with the group my experience with zoneminder and vmware. I had been running the vmware appliance on my Mac as a Virtural machine for a few months and decided to move it to a dedicated server. I had a 64bit HP Pavillion desktop so after a lot of trial and error I ended up installing VMWare ESXi 4 server on it and I am very happy with it. I have configured it for Paravirtualization and it runs very fast. I have 6 cameras and can in montage view I get 15 fps for all six at the same time and the server load stays under 2.0. I can of course take snapshots and easily back up the entire VM over the network with VMWare VM Converter. The best part is that VMWare ESXi hypervisor is free. So is the WIN client to manage it, as well as the VMWare converter. I highly recommend this option. Let me know if you have questions about the setup.

can you share us more info:
which is the hardware configuration of yours HP Pavilion ?
which linux distribution are you using in your VMware machine and what version of zoneminder ?

I'm using now VMware server 2.0.2, Zoneminder 1.24.3 - Ubuntu 32 on a core 2 duo 2.4 machine and I'm not happy at all.
I have 3 mjpeg camera and one with rtp/rtsp. when I ad the rtp/rtsp camera to my monitors the web interface stop responding and Ubuntu (under VMware) show an 100% processor utilization in system monitor.
