I have ZoneMinder installed in Ubuntu 10.04 through the good graces of Synaptic Package Manager on a dual booting lap top, a HP Compaq 6730s KS079UT. How do I configure the the camera in the lap top? I checked the preset list but I can find no mention of camera's built into lap tops. I checked the HP specs on my lap top but there is no documentaion of the camera type. All I see is: "camera built in".
How do you configure ZoneMinder to see the camera in your lap top?
you need to find out the type of camera and chipset installed in the laptop and install the kernel drivers for it, if Ubuntu has not already done so then its my guess that it would be beyond your abilities to get the camera working easily.
If the laptop was supplied with linux already installed by the manufacture then the camera should be linux compatible, if on the other hand it came with windows then its a fare bet the camera wont be compatible, but I can very easily be wrong with that last point
see the USB compatibility section of the wiki, as the camera will be attached via USB is most cases.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my query. The camera is not, unfortunately, a USB connected device. The camera is built in to the lid of the lap top. Here is another question. I have the camera control software package 'motion' working on my lap top. Does that make a difference? Can a working version of motion be converted to a working version of zoneminder?
I would still suggest the camera is connected internally via USB, it would be just directly connected in to the USB hub in the chipset,
unless the chipset has the hardware necessary to process the images from the camera but Ive never seen one.
The reasion Im saying this is I have a laptop with a camera built in to the lid and that is connected to the USB bus inside.
Of course I could be wrong with your camera but I would place money on it being a USB camera.
Anyways that aside, this software you are talking about 'motion' is that a linux or windows application,
if its a windows application then I think you've totally missed the point of Zoneminder,
if its a Linux one then it would be possible to pipe the feed into Zoneminder but how I'm not sure of at the moment.
If motion is a linux application and it can use the camera then it must be using it via some method and I would suggest that you can do the same method with ZM.
Finally and I suppose I should have started with this, can you use the camera on the computer whilst using Ubuntu.
