Hardware compatibility - DX IP Cameras

Post by I.A. »

Hi
I wish to build a linux based security system in my office and I stumbled upon ZoneMinder.

since I have a limited budget I would appreciate if anyone can confirm if I can work with one of the "no-brand" IP cameras, like the ones I can Buy from sites like Dealextreme?

One camera's Specs look like:
- Model: IP-400 IP CAMERA
- Simply plug into your home/office ethernet LAN network
- Supports TCP/IP
- 300,000 pixels 1/3? CMOS sensor, 4mm LENS
- Motion-JPEG video capture encoding
- 30fps @ 320*240
- Supported resolutions: VGA (640*480), QVGA (320*240)
- 10/100 Base-T RJ-45 Ethernet LAN port built-in
- IR infrared night vision

Thanks

The problem with the unbranded cameras, and those from dx included, is that you get no useful guarantees.

I have two of these which have been working fine for about 7 months, outside but sheltered from the rain, at 640x480 @ 3fps.

However - before you rush off and order 20 of the things, be aware that the firmware may have changed completely and no longer work with zoneminder. (Slim chance, but it's there). I know from other products on dx that what worked for somebody one day (dvb-t tuners in linux) turned up with completely different innards the next day and wouldn't work, so it is a risk.

Hi,

I have the same model outdoors, covered by a balcony, the image is fine @320x240, not that goog @640x480, but for me is enough. Working 6 months 24x7, no problems.
