Exited Abnormally? Exit status 255.

Hi All,

Now that I'm all googled out and a million and one tinkerings have proven fruitless, my last resort is to consult you directly because I feel I'm all out of idea's now.

- ZoneMinder Version: v1.24.4
- Linux server 3.0.0-14-generic #23-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 21 20:34:47 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

I have 5 IP Camera's. Identical D-Link DCS-920's (Firmware 1.04) 1 connected via cable and 4 connected via wi-fi. For the most part, everything is working except that I keep getting the same error messages in my /var/log/syslog (see below)

To aid in troubleshooting, I have now disabled all camera's except one. To eliminate wi-fi I am troubleshooting with the camera connected directly to the router via cable. (I have a Linksys WRT54GL Running Tomato 1.28.)

I've tried all kinds of things from tweaking the shared memory settings as per the wiki as well as installing the turbo libjpeg. I've tried various buffer settings and even tweaked QOS on my router to allow packets from the camera's through ahead of anything else. (I've also tried with QOS disabled, no impact on the results.)

Camera's are set to deliver 320x240 images at 5fps. ZoneMinder is set to the same. While set to Monitor, the only visible problem aside from the logs is that fps occasionally drops very low, like 1fps and I get a blue screen for a few frames every so often.
The machine running ZoneMinder is DEDICATED to the task and not running anything besides what's required. Apache, Mysql etc. It's a 3.06 GHZ core2 Duo with 2GB of RAM and CPU utilization rarely exceeds 30%.

I don't understand what could be causing the "Interrupted System Call" ERR because it's certainly not load related.

I hope someone with more experience with ZoneMinder will be able to point me in the right direction to get this solved. If there is any additional information I could provide that would aid you, don't hesitate to ask.

Certainly, they are:

Image Buffer Size (frames): 40
Warmup Frames: 25
Pre Event Image Count: 10
Post Event Image Count: 10
Stream Replay Image Buffer: 1000
Alarm Frame Count: 1

And in case it's relevant, my shared memory settings in sysctl.conf
kernel.shmax = 134217728
kernel.shmall = 134217728

I did read in a post elsewhere that a good value here was 256000000, but trying it made no difference. (The figure above is from the wiki to specify 128mb.)

Hi,

Your buffer settings are not too high, so try lowering the FPS to 3 and Alarm FPS to 5.

I'm sorry to report that after changes made as per your recommendation above, the problem persists. I'm still getting:

Dumb question, could you access the web server of this cameras from the same computer where you have ZM installed?

After more than 15 years, no longer using ZM as surveillance system.
Now in the dark side, using a commercial system...

Yes I can, no problems there.

Related: What I have noticed is at night when all is "black" the error is somewhat less frequent (but still present).
During the day, the error message is generated constantly.

Seems to me turning the login off on the camera fixed the 900's, 910's and 920's. Also check your path against these.

OK, I gave that a try, but no joy. In fact I have the OPPOSITE problem of the user who posted there in that when he disabled user authentication, he got it to work. In my case, disabling user authentication resulted in this:

Looks like the camera is actively refusing the connection request, that tells me that the camera authentication hasn't been turned off or ZM is still sending credentials it doesn't recognize. If I remember right I had to change "admin" with no password to blank with no password. I also remember having to do a reset to factory values then make the changes before it finally worked. Do you really think authentication is the issue here? Given that with a username and password provided, ZM has no trouble displaying the images from the camera. Surely if I'm able to see the feed from the camera via ZM, the authentication has been successful?

What I did notice when I had supplied nothing but an IP address to ZM and turned off User Authentication on the camera itself is that I was still getting this:

On the 900's fps would usually be very low and logs would be filled with connection failures, disabling login fixed everything but had to restrict IP at router. 920 was the same but took a lot of head banging to remember what had fixed the 900 several years earlier.
