VLC Stream to Zoneminder Monitor-Modect from Windows Webcam

Post by AgentWorm »

Has anyone done this? If so can you share your settings on both sides of the connection please?

Note: I've tried to give more information, but the BB banners: "Your post looks too spamy for a new user" even though it contains no special characters and no URLs of any kind???? !!!!

<<Slowly adding text incrementally to discover what the BB hates:?>>

Resources in my setup:
Hardwired Ethernet Network (using port 8070 thru router)
Windows XP Machine
Logitec Skype Chat USB camera
Vlc 1.1.10 Win32

Zoneminder Service
Ubuntu Lucid LTS
Zoneminder 1.24.2 (Installed from Ubuntu pkgs)

The Chat worked fine with Zoneminder plugged in locally to the Ubuntu server USB hub.

Yes, I have searched both this and the Videolan forums, as well as the web.

<<NB to BB Lords: I had triple-w period instead of 'web.' at the end of the last sentence which caused the BB to reject my posts for having "too many off-site URLs." Lame.>>

Thanks for any light you can shed.

Just tested what used to be simple and got exactly the same results as you; all green but no go. My windows XP vlc feed was at 352*288, and I know that if ZM doesn't get exactly what it expects it won't work. Tried from a Linux machine with the same results. Worked great VLC to VLC so my next attempt will be just that with a local output to ZM but that will be at least a week or more away, sorry.

And yes I saw your original post and started testing against Fedora 12 and 1.24.2 before giving an answer.

No worries. Thanks much for the ping back to let me know you're on it. This is my 1st post however, so you may be twisting threads. Not mission critical, just putting together a Zoneminder replacement for an aging X10-based home security system. The goal is to have my wife's PC/Cam monitor the interior front door and living room. Love the clean, lightweight console interface and the relative ease of setup...at least thru the Ubuntu distro. Cheers!

Ping! Hoping to re-activate this moribund thread.

Hoping to tackle this from another angle: what, specifically does Zoneminder look for a video stream and how can I satisfy it using VLC streaming output?

I'm hoping to stream from VLC install on a Window XP box, using the webcam on that box. I had given up on the VLC/Zoneminder combination and was using WebcamXP to stream to Zoneminder, until anti-virus software discovered a trojan in the download of the WebcamXP package (from CNET no less).

WebcamXP and its trojan are now gone, but I'm back to looking at good old VLC for my streaming needs. I'm willing to thrash around with the detailed command line args to VLC, but it would really help in this if I knew -exactly- what ZM wants to see.

Of course, if anyone has a link to a successful setup of this kind, or had done it themselves...please share.

Thanks for any help.

Gave up on VLC and am playing with Gstreamer with about the same luck.

Also gave up on VLC. Using YAWcam on the XP machine now. Drops frames occasionally, but otherwise reliable.
