I finally got Zoneminder 1.24 running on Ubuntu 11.10. I am using an X10 XX40A IP camera. It displays the image stream on the monitor screen but when I go to the zone configuration page, and try to add or edit a zone, the menu is there but the image is all white. Not seeing an image there I used the "best, high speed" preset and left the entire area for the zone, but no events get recorded.
Is there something I should have done to set up the database?
Any ideas?

Well, motion detection now works 
It seems the problem was permissions on the event storage directory.
The zone definition does seem to work, but I still can't get the zone editing page to show the camera image. I set the zone area by approximating where the edges might be if the image were there. Not exact, but it works for the time being.
