ZoneMinder as event browser only?

I have 8 x 2MP cameras to monitor and only a dual-core 2.2GHz server to monitor them. I was wondering whether people have had success using ZM to act only as a central event recorder, working off a low resolution stream from each IP camera, and having the camera keep a constant hi res video store running locally, or uploaded to a remote NAS. It seems sensible to make as much use of the camera's processing power as possible, surely? Isn't ZM essentially just treating them as dumb devices? Seems like a waste...
