JBOD Configurations

Post by zdabbas »

Hello everyone.

Forgive me I'm very new to Zoneminder but I have a question:-

I have installed Zoneminder with Ubunto 12.04 LTS Server on a 2U dual Xeon 6 core 2.5Ghz with 32G of ram and 12 x 4TB hdd SATA 3 hotplug.

is there a way to have zoneminder record on the first drive and when it's full move to the 2nd without having to do RAID.?

I would really appreciate a detailed answer.

I have 5 systems to build 2 are with 12 drives and 3 with 57 drive all 4TB SATA 3.

thank you all in advance.

Why not set them up on RAID6? Let the RAID take care of disk space for you, should a drive fail you get time to replace it before the risk of losing data.

My system has four 2TB drives set up as software RAID5. All I have to do is keep an eye on the meta devices to ensure nothing has dropped out, but even if an entire drive drive goes offline my data is safe unless I ignore it long enough for a second drive to fail.

I understand and I would prefer that, but my boss wants to recycle the drives every 3 months and store the recordings for at least 12 months. if I have 57 drives done as one RAID it's going to be a nightmare to label each one and keep track of what is what. also we can overlap the drives as we go along. so the idea is that when a drive is full it's taken out and replaced with a new one, and the cycle continues until we reach that last drive. depending on the size of the recording (h264 full HD), we might have replace the drive 3 or 4 times over a period of 12 months.

so any ideas?
