socket_sendto () failed: No such file or directory

I'm unable to display video streams from VLC or Grandstream ip camera, or local USB logitech webcam. VLC can open all streams using RTSP and Linphone and Ekiga can see the webcam on /dev/vidio0. ZM repeatedly creates a similar socket file in the /tmp/zm directory, with a zms-123456w.sock with a "w" instead of and "s" and then removes it. I get the same error messages for all streams, and have never been able to display an image.

I've scoured google and found lots of posts and followed all of the workarounds, changed apache2 ScriptAlias, permissions, etc. but nothing works. I have the same issue on Mythbuntu 12.04.1. in Vbox.

Ubuntu 12.04.4 64 latest updates, zoneminder v1.25.0 from apt binary.
