Hi,
It would help to know what version of Linux you are using. If you are just starting out I would recommend Ubuntu 14.04. Some good instructions here:

Hi kryptic

as many cameras are made with H.264 I would not recommend Ubuntu as it is having issues with Ffmpeg that is used with H.264. If you have just started, you can think about CentOS. Easier to change now!

To install CentOS, I did use this link: http://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2 ... tallation/

The Zoneminder installation is done with this link: https://blog.yibi.org/tag/zoneminder-centos
Just follow the link and ZM vill be working perfectly, and as a bonus, Ffmeg works!!!

Last statement about Ubuntu having problems with ffmpeg is not true. I have several h.264 cameras running ffmpeg quite well thank you! You may need to tone the resolution down, adjust the key frame interval and be aware of memory usage on your server. All of these issues are addressed in the wiki and forum...
