Need help setting up Zoneminder for home monitoring

I apologise for this post because I'm going to seem pretty helpless, but I'm lost as to what I need to do next.

I have a Raspberry Pi 2 that I've installed Zoneminder to, I can access it and change settings etc.

I am going to pick up a webcam because apparently a Mobius actioncam does not mount with the Pi2, so I'll solve that bit later.

Otherwise.. I think I need a tutorial on what exactly to do. All the documentation I've found I can't really understand. I am good with computers but there are a lot of things I am not at all familiar with (setting up a server, for example).

Here is what I want to do: I want to have a camera set up that monitors for motion, when it is tripped it starts recording and sends me an email alert. At that point I can log into the stream remotely from my phone to take a look at what is happening.

I have no idea how to make that happen. Even just looking through the settings there are two places for you provide an email address and I have no idea what the difference is. One is called OPT_EMAIL the other is called OPT_MESSAGE, and both seem to be referring to sending you an email upon alert. I also have no idea how to set it up so I can view the stream remotely, I guess I need to set up a server ??

Okay I have two specific questions now.

How do I set up my EMAIL_HOST and my URL for remotely viewing the feed? I have everything else set up but I have beyond no idea what my SMTP mail server host is or how to find my "url of your installation as it would appear from where you read your email"


Also I realized I'm running 1.25.0 if that makes any difference

Followed the instructions. SSMTP is working, can send myself an email via command line.
Have reached the end of the wiki, zoneminder still isn't sending me emails for alerts though :/

What other info would you guys need from me? I ran the tail command while Zoneminder was running and it never sent a call to try to send an email :/ I just identified the zmtrigger abnormal exit status 9 bug (not sure how to go about fixing it but I don't think its the problem here?).
