Web Gui stops working when console is started

When the zoneminder service is stopped and apache2 is running, I am able to access the web gui just fine and view events. When the zoneminder service is started, the web gui quickly stops working. "service zoneminder stop" will not stop zoneminder, it will just hang at "Stopping zoneminder". I have to go through and manually kill the zma and zmc processes. I assume this is related to the warnings in the log below. As soon as zoneminder service (or zma, zmc) is stopped, the web gui will work fine again only showing "Stopped" for the monitor.

I am running 16 cameras, all set to record function. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, load is about 50%, and allocated ram 61%.

How much ram do you have? It is possible that with 16 cameras you are running out of ram. Your database may also be grabbing a lot of ram. I run 16 cameras on 12 gig of ram with the resolution turned down to 320x240

I have 8gb. After some troubleshooting / messing around i found that if i disable monitor id #3 it seems to solve the problem. In my log above it was the device causing the following:

What could cause a monitor to hang the entire application? I don't think ram is an issue because things run perfectly without this camera enabled.

Well, it could be the one that pushes your system over the edge. Ubuntu, by default, uses half of the RAM for tmpfs or RAM drive. ZM uses this memory space (/run/shm in 14.04) to process images. Do a "df" to see how much of this space is being used. The higher the camera resolution the more space in tmpfs is used. If this is the case there are several things you can do: more RAM, lower the camera resolution or give /run/shm more space (of course this could cause issues elsewhere). I have also learned that MySQL running innodb can gobble up RAM as the number of events builds up. On my 17 camera system I have had to set innodb_buffer_pool_size to 2G. You can install and run mysqltuner to see what is going on with MySQL.
