issues after updating from 1.28.1: Permission denied

Hi All

I have just updated my Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS, Zoneminder install from 1.28.1 to 1.29.0.
Everything went smoothly or so I thought, but the system is no longer recording to disc.

Looking at the Zoneminder logs I am just getting loads of errors like the following.

Can't symlink events/2/16/04/02/.15586 -> events/2/16/04/02/09/53/48: Permission denied

Everything was working and recording just fine before the update to 1.29.

I have checked the folder ownership at /var/cache/zoneminder, this and all subfolders/files are owed by www-data:www-data

It seems that Zoneminder is creating the folders, but is not creating any files.

It seems that Zoneminder is only creating the camera id folder "2", then fails to make any additional folders.

# ls -l /var/cache/zoneminder/events
drw-r--r-- 2 www-data www-data 4096 Apr 2 10:15 2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 www-data www-data 1 Apr 2 09:53 Camera-2 -> 2

The folder permissions don't look right to me, but then I can't remember what is was before the upgrade.

Any ideas?

I have just installed a clean install of Ubuntu and Zoneminder on a VM.

Folder permissions after clean install of Zoneminder on a VM

# ls -l /var/cache/zoneminder/events
drwxr-xr-x 3 www-data www-data 4096 Apr 2 20:05 1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 www-data www-data 1 Apr 2 20:05 Monitor-1 -> 1

Folder permissions of my current install

# ls -l /var/cache/zoneminder/events
drw-r--r-- 2 www-data www-data 4096 Apr 2 10:15 2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 www-data www-data 1 Apr 2 09:53 Camera-2 -> 2

Now if I remove the folders within events and images, zoneminder will recreate the 1st folder with the "drw-r--r-- 2 www-data www-data" permissions. but it can not make any additional folders and or files.

drwxr-xr-x (755)
vs
drw-r--r-- (644)

I don't see why Zoneminder was reading and writing with the correct permissions, but since the update it has changed the permissions.

Doing a clean install on my current system is not currently an option, I need to repair the current issue.

Can you please advice.

chmod -R 755 /var/cache/zoneminder

As said above each time the current zoneminder makes a new folder it gives the folder drw-r--r-- (644) permissions.

Running chmod -R 755 /var/cache/zoneminder as you said will only repair the permissions for all folders and files that have already been made.
As soon as zoneminder makes a new folder or file it gives it the (644) permissions and back to the same problem.

I need to find out why zoneminder is giving the folders / files the (644) permissions.

Everything is working as expect on a VM clean install of Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS and Zoneminder 1.29.0

Something has to have gone wrong during the upgrade from 1.28.1 to 1.29.0

I am not linux savvy, but is there anyway I can compare the Zoneminder program files between my clean VM install, and my current system install?
Is there any other log files that I should be looking at to try and work out what is going on?
