Has anyone bought a new usb 2 web cam and tested it with zoneminder.
All the driver support seems to be with units over 3 years old.
Any feedback on low light web cams would be nice

Webcam support in Linux seems to be pretty crap at present. I've got two at home that don't appear to have working drivers (one of which is a USB2 Trust Spacecam 380, the other is a Sony Eyetoy), and a third I haven't tested yet (which I think was a USB2 Trust Spacecam 360).
When tested on Windows the best of these in low-light conditions was actually the Sony Eyetoy, though even then it's not amazing.

Unfortunatly as I understand, there is no set standard for how webcams communicate over USB thus leaving it to the manufacturers to decide how they want to do this and it seems that even the same manufacturer may not follow the same protcol from camera to camera. This makes providing support from the linux community a real challenge to not only try to support the chipsets used but how each camera communicates it's image. Since most have closed source and develop drivers only for the borg I think it's a good bet that unless someone set's a standard (wether it be a manufacturer and some may try, or a real standard) we'll always be a few years behind
That's how it was expained to me on one of the Dev mailings.
