The answer is hopefully "yes". But I'm removing it altogether as a first step so than noone gets the mistaken impression that what's in there works. Then I try to make it actually work.
Happy new year 2008! :P
And to you (and everyone else watching this thread too).

I forgot the HAppy New Year 2008!

I installed this .deb via apt and have it running successfully.
I did the extras from the wiki as needed.
http://www.zoneminder.com/wiki/index.ph ... rom_a_.deb

chmod 4755 /usr/bin/zmfix

In the settings/system I enabled
ZM_OPT_USE_AUTH

and changed

ZM_AUTH_RELAY
to "none"

This fixes the problem outlined here

I found it necessary to manually enable all the cameras for the admin user. Is that the normal behavior, or do I have something else misconfigured?

hardware:
Intel DG965WHMR motherboard
Core2duo E6600
2 GB ram (4 slot board for upgrade possibility)
PV-183 16 port capture card
2x500GB seagate SATA in software RAID1

(11) Sony SSC-M183 B&W cameras
320x240 greyscale
alarm at 10fps

Load is at 0.40

8400 events so far in 21 hours, at a busy nursing facility!

Thank you all for your efforts. Paypal is on the way 8)

I hate giving useless replies, but I think I need to for completeness.

Don't know  . Hopefully someone with an idea on this is still following this thread.

your reply was no more useless than the question itself, since it was no biggie to enable the cameras:)
I checked in, the load is at 0.14 when all is quiet, with only one zone getting any motion.
I'll be adding 1 more analog camera, and at least 2 magapixel IP cams.
The system is more than adequate for that, as far as I can tell.
I dialed up the quality to 100 on the capture and display, so I can hurry up and test out the purge when full filter.
I can't get over how well this works. Thanks again all of you.

How about Plain Xubuntu as a Distro

Post by Secutor »

On the topic of "which distro" it would seem attractive to me to just use Xubuntu and then apt-get install Zoneminder as a binary resource from the distribution sources. That way one takes advantage of upstream packaging and it's easy to update. Are there drawbacks to this approach?
Thanks.

The official repos are often slow to update. Other than that, no.
