Okay so that's fine and actually the proper way to have it for the most part.
So the directive is not the issue.

So what path do you have configured in zm options under the path tab?

/media/cam for both. exactly like that.

The error message is saying it can't find the picture files, right? what doesn't make sense is that I WAS able to export the files as tarballs before... implying that there is something wrong with the recently added code. We have checked the permissions, we have checked ownership.... I don't really know what to do!

What did you mean, here?

"the only thing where the symlink would fail in this case would be still images,"

If it is able to save those video files (well, jpegs), why can't it later call them with the script?

Wait I just looked at the files under /media/cam/
it shows :
\drwxr-xr-x 413 www-data www-data 20480 2008-08-12 16:50 1
drwxr-xr-x 413 www-data www-data 20480 2008-08-12 16:50 2
drwxr-xr-x 413 www-data www-data 20480 2008-08-12 16:50 3
drwxr-xr-x 417 www-data www-data 20480 2008-08-12 16:50 4
drwxr-xr-x 413 www-data www-data 20480 2008-08-12 16:50 5
drwxr-xr-x 413 www-data www-data 20480 2008-08-12 16:50 6
drwxr-xr-x 412 www-data www-data 20480 2008-08-12 16:50 7
drwx------ 2 www-data www-data 16384 2008-06-18 08:24 lost+found

it lists them by number, not camera name!
the error is:

Warning: opendir(/media/cam/CommonEast/49989) [function.opendir]: failed to open dir: No such file or directory in /usr/share/zoneminder/zm_export_funcs.php on line 198

why is it going by name and not number?

thanks

I can continue to try to walk you through it or another option is if you get me ssh access into the machine I can either fix it or walk you through it over the phone.

The latter would obviously be much quicker.

Had a lot of help from Corel, couldn't be more pleased. will update with solutions soon.

Still getting this error:

The requested URL /zm/temp/export.mpeg was not found on this server.

I created a /usr/share/zoneminder/temp folder but I don't know how to go from here. Maybe create a fake folder then a symlink?

There is a known bug with those links and cameras that begin with a number. I am betting that you are missing some links.

Actually that was part of it and it's not really a bug, but resulted from a incorrect configuration that didn't give Apache permission to create the links and also contributed to several other problems.
I sorted all that out and made manual fixes for everything.

As to your current error, there is something strange there, as there is not anything in ZM that would try to create an export.mpeg so either you have something custom which we would need to understand to be able to help.

You welcome to pay for support to either Phil or myself since this is a commercial system, Phil would obviously be best as all the funds would go towards ZM, or myself and I turn 25% back at Phil. Either way you can email either of us for details.

Just saw your last post now (not sure why I didn't get a notification e-mail) and just wanted to say that I got it figured out; was a browser issue.

Update again later.
