i haven't tried the zm + motion yet, gone through the doc, feel like i m having some other fault.'

I am not so sure it's something other than ZM. ZM and Linux in general have some shortcomings dealing with USB Cameras. I personally have tried three different webcams with only limited success. I believe this is going to be a linux webcam driver issue combined with a ZM issue. There has been limited success getting webcams to work under ZM even though they work fine with xawtv or cheese or even vlc for that matter. Searching the forums will reveal lots of webcam help request, you are not alone. Since you know it works using vlc I would suggest you try the mjpeg_streamer method I previously mentioned. It seems to be the only way I have gotten webcams (ie..Logitech, Connectix, and a MS) to work under ZM. I know it's not pretty but it works.
