Resolution and image clarity

There are a couple of reasons why you might not see the motion-induced interlace mismatch I illustrate above if you're using a TV signal:

• The TV is showing a movie or something else originally recorded on film. Film frame rate is typically 24 frames a second, so both interlaced half-frames actually (mostly) come from the same original film frame.
• You've paused a video or DVD. They sometimes manage pauses by only using one half-frame, in which case you'll not see motion-mismatch. With old basic VCRs you'll likely see mismatches.
