well thanks for all that.

i have installed LAMP and tasksel.

just now i don't want your handy script because i want to keep mysql on the basis that i'm familiar with it.

so that sends me back to following the wiki

that directed me to finding my ubuntu ver which turns out to be 16.04 for my Mint which is mint 18, Sarah.

that seemed to indicate i have to download this lubuntu 16.04 with zoneminder preconfigured... CD or USB - and make the CD or USB.

took me to this page: https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Lubuntu_16. ... _CD_or_USB

and that says 'when you boot the system lubuntu will..........'

making it look like that CD (or USB) is going to install lubuntu...

I just wonder am I going in the wrong direction there or that's what i must do? make a CD and run it on my machine and then somewhere along the line I'll get install choices for zoneminder?

Yes, you are on the wrong direction again!

Did you read this?
If you use one of the desktops provided with Ubuntu (Gnome, Unity, KDE, et. al.) use the corresponding Ubuntu server install/upgrade instructions. You may need to install tasksel to make it easier to install LAMP as most of the Ubuntu instructions start with a system set up with LAMP. It is recommended to install Zoneminder from a terminal. Using a software/package manager can get you in trouble!

Here is the link to the WIKI page you need:
https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Ubuntu_Serv ... e_easy_way

Just make sure you make the changes to MySQL in the procedure.

Oh, Mariadb is, for the most part, the same as MySQL with fewer issues and it seems to perform better.

i did but I didn't realise I was using one of the desktops provided with Ubuntu. That's what Mint is? And the word 'server' drove me away thinking I don't have a server, just a normal install. Like in windows there's two different softwares there.

Thanks for the link. I'll embark...

:)

Actually, even in Windows there is little difference between a server and a desktop. Yes, Windows desktop runs a server service to share files and other services but it is limited in the amount of sharing it can do. And Linux server can run a GUI desktop!

Going well. Thanks to your help.

I have it installed and got the first instance up on my browser a while ago.

It doesn't appear to see my webcam, nor the wireless IP cams - but the latter I expect to have to reconfigure.

But I thought it might find a webcam fastened to the pc locally.
