Once I tried to set up video surveillance in the entrance. The server was running Ubuntu with a KVM hypervisor. I thought setting up the ZoneMinder would be the easiest and best solution for me. But the processor load amazed me ... And storing the video archive in the form of a bunch of jpeg images didn't please me either. But after reading this topic, I wondered if a simple replacement of the hard drive could solve my problems? I abandoned this idea after a protracted raid-data-recovery for another project. I liked the quality of salvagedata work, but for a while, this situation discouraged my desire to experiment. Seems worth a try now.

If your camera is rtsp/ffmpeg, you can turn the jpeg off and use passthrough or encode/decode on the storage tab of the camera.
