I have an every separate JPEG at a size of about 50 KB at my resolution. I don't have any image analisys for motion etc. I also do understand how does the ZM software differ from other ones - it processes and stores still frames, not the video. And I even agree with that - it is a kind of a feature, not a bug.

The only thing not clear to me is if I have reached my hardware limit or I did something wrong. For me it is strange if zma works well while having some RAM and then getting all the CPU when it has eated it.

I'm just looking for the bottleneck.

I assume that when zm turns into anyting other than monitor (espicilly the detection types) it loads images into ram for analysis. I maybe wrong as i havnt a clue how it actually works under the hood. Are u using any swap when the proc peaks?

If that last question is about the survey page, I have my own webserver setting 4 meters away from me at the moment (one of two, ones moving to a new location part of the relocation project) I have mysql already running on it and of course php. I'm just spliting up the web server and the ftp till the ATM comes in at the new location.

NP, Actualy it's my slow typing compiled with accupied with making the build/compiling machine so I can build more packages and for more distros. Rebuilding kernels is keeping me a little busy. It was really in responce to dmit a few posts back about wether some one needs to be a sys admin Hopefully the virtual machines will be done soon since I've been working on it for the last 20 hrs strait

If zma has nothing to analyse and if ZM is just writing the stills onto hard drive and still having this memory allocation issue, does it mean that the writing images to HDD is the only resource consuming problem?

cordel: off topic but i have a bit of hardware doing little at the mo do these things take power can i help you out?

It would be difficult to walk anyone through this. This is all I guess the term is bleeding edge software. I basicaly have a base install of FC4 that is running other distros on top of it. It started out as UML (User Mode Linux) on FC3 but it was very resource hungry and would take almost 1 1/2 hours just to build each zm package, so I started following the dev of XEN on FC4 which compiles the packages in about the same time as a stand alone system 53 seconds
I have it almost finnished finally and just need to start working on the scripts to automate it a bit. Building the last kernel now and It should finnish up inthe next couple hours
I've been tring to get to this point for a while and on of my coworkers donated a machine thats at least fast enough. If you know anyone selling any RAMbus 800MHz ECC for a Dell Precision let me know. I need a GIG

Regarding part of the thread regarding running on a PII.

I currently run (fairly happily) with a 4 port cheap BT card @ about 2-5 fps with a PII 350MHz, 384MB RAM.

What's everyone's opinion: Will I see a worthwhile performacne increase going to an AMD 2GHz with 512MB RAM or will I have more problems with compatibility and extra heat, etc?

Do you have 2-5 FPS per port while all the cams are active or you get the total of 2-5 FPS for the card? What is the resolution and color mode for the cams?

Don't worry about compatibility, it will just work. :)

dmit... I get about 2.8 fps per port. I am using greyscale @ 320x240. Although I have to say something strange has happened recently. ZM has been just fine. Perfect. BUT - I also host family jpegs on the ZM box. Nothing special, no security or anything. For some reason, my downloads have become chronically slow (locally and via www).

Not sure why that should be, ZM seems fine (but slow as usual due to PII)

I'm running IPCOP 'out-of-the-box' and I record an awful lot of intrusion attempts every day, but of course I have no idea if any are successful )

There are alot of tools out there for intrusion detection. You must remember there is also alot or virus and spam activity on ports 1026 and 1027. You might want to have a look at this tool

It will trap the snmp traffic from your firewall and report that back to dshield whom in turn sends the info to internic. I use it with my firewall appliance but do not have it sending the info out yet.
