you might try switching to ntsc and try 320x240 and 640x480 and see if that clears this up.
I met exactly the same problem.
The USB cam works fine in xawtv, but got 'broken link'(no image) in zm.
I am trying all kinds of resolution setting and increased shared memory size, but so far no luck.
