Removed eth0 from madrakelinuxcontrol (my builtin VIA NIC) and disabled it in BIOS....

I just dropped in an ancient 3c5x9 from 1998! It's lights are on, my router is even kindly obliging by changing it's link light from green to yellow (indicating it's at 10Mbps not 100).

But still it sits there forever at boot saying
bringing up eth1...failed
SIOCSFFLAGS Function not implemented :x

ok, so let's sum up where we are:

1. tried onboard LAN (via rhine)
2. tried a linksys LNE100TX NIC
3. tried an Etherlink 3c509 NIC
4. tries at least 3 different UTP cables
5. tried both DHCP and static addresses
6. messed around with various BIOS settings (no other cards in PC, have disabled all onboard stuff)
7. even bypassed the router and plugged into cable model
9. despite all this, my router shows 100mbps lamp for the Rhine and Linksys, and shows 10Mmps lamp for old 3com
10. And I keep getting at boot: bringing up eth1...failed
SIOCSFFLAGS Function not implemented

What tiny stupid little thing am I missing???!

Have a great evening!

I dropped in ubuntu CD and started over, and guess what - built in NIC works just fine. So I guess it is some bizarre comination of Bios/Mandrake/Interrupts causing the problem, somehow not affected by the debian ubuntu....

I've read a few posts by folks who've tried ubuntu with great sucess, so wish me luck + thanks for all your help James!

I d/l'ed LiveCD and burned it as an image. Popped it in the cd drive with a clean/new hard drive. It looks as if it is installing and then at some point it restarts and does that over and over again.

Help Please!
