Did you do this command as SU or root?
The command should be there as it is part of the core packages.

you may need the absolute path if you did su instead of login as root.

/sbin/chkconfig

Thanks sgtdawg, it worked using absolute path as I was doing SU.

The regular LiveCD does not have an SMP kernel, so I thought I would try Mandriva.

Mandriva 2005 LE will not install on either of my SMP boxes, one being an Intel 440GX+ with dual Pentium II's, and the other an HP NetServer 6000r U3 with dual Pentium III Xeon's. All sorts of different errors, am seeking help on the MandrakeUsers.com forums.

Will this distro provide any joy?

you culd try pclinuxos they have an smp option that can be added to their live cd. I use pclinux os for my zm boxes but hvae not tried an dual prc yet. I think the smp kernels are limited to lowmem (1gig) but that should be ok given the reletive power of your servers

As ctu core is fedora based cant you update that to incluse smp support?

Reason behind me suggesting pclinuxos is that it seems mandrake based so your learning curve (and mine) wont be to steep as its similar to live cd. But has a 2.6.12 kernel available

From what I'm reading, F1 ran OK on the NetServer with MegaRaid, but F2 and F3 do not...

I will try the PCLinuxOS - is there anything I need to do other than downloading the LiveCD and installing it? You mention there is an SMP option that can be added, and would that require me to download a different kernel or something? I'll give it a try, I just don't want to download the whole distro and try it before I find out I shoulda done something different.

i think the current live cd will give you a 2.6.11 lowmem kernel.
Once booted install to hd just like Ross's livecd. Boot HD install
Use synaptic to install the kernel you need, modify lilo to boot the correct kernel. Once your happy its stable remove the old kernel.

Current PClos includes kernel-pclos-i586-up-1GB-2.6.11.oci12.mdk-1-1oci, and I'll bet I have trouble even installing with that, but I'll give it a try. The other LiveCD reports a kernel panic, but here's hoping with this one!

could you disbale one of the proc to make it a 1 way system until you have to correct kernel installed. I would have thought given the age of your system that the old cd's should work as there isnt any new hardware on it, but i have never tried a twin proc beast as yet

I don't believe I can disable one processor, I believe it would have to be removed, and that may or may not require a voltage regulator to be put in its place.

I will check the specs on the Intel L440GX+ motherboard and see what I can do.

I wonder if I could try to install the original LiveCD and then swap out the kernel - or is that something crazy? If it would even install...

not sure how you you would get on, i tried to update to 2.6.8 kernel and the machine became unstable (i did use the built in tools)
Have u/g on pclinux and had no issues (as yet)) i think the tools with pclos are easier to use than mandrake but im quite inexperienced
