I got a cheap Topica camera --ran the wires. works great. Fedora 7 x86_64 with DSL. I'm in tweak and tune phase for best performance. Monitoring is fascinating. I've got room for 3 more camera's. Got alot of mysql experience --not really needed for this app. Needed to get Mime::Lite for alarm notifications to my mobile device. Watch the logs and adjust.

some kernel adjustment:
kernel.shmmax = 1024000000
kernel.shmall = 102400000

maybe overkill --runs pretty smoothly, I've got 2G of memory.

yum install zoneminder --easy

enjoy

Added an ASTAK night vision camera: Model CM-818W. Again, it's relatively inexpensive. The device settings:

Device Path: /dev/video1
Device Channel: 0
Device Format: NTSC
Device Pallet: RGB*
Capture Width (pixels) 640
Capture Height (pixels) 480

monitor mode for now.

Haven't had to mess with /etc/modprobe.conf. PV-149 card is detected on boot.
CPU load is about .8x-1.2 or so. Athlon 64 X2 6000+. New machine built by parts from NewEgg.com
