What processor/ram specs should I be looking at if I was going to use the 8port(240fps) capture card from bluecherry? Using two of them in one box.

Also, what kind of frame rates can I expect when all 8 ports are in use?

I read somewhere that is wasn't simply take 240 and divide by 8. I hope that they were wrong, and it is that simple.

its all dependant upon the number of chips, talking pal then its 25 fps per chip, and 8 chips gives 200fps

But 2 cards (ie 400fps) will need a powerful pc, quadcore, 4 gig ram and fast king-fast drives.

I have run about 350 fps at 320x240 on a fast core duo but disks couldnt keep up at that record rate

It is 240/8 since you have an 8 chip card, and each one does 30 fps. However, there may be some overheard occasionally I generally get 20-25 fps. I also set the idle fps to 5, and it takes some time to "spin up" to full speed.

Anyway, You want an Intel chipset to eliminate buss timing issues. That means an Intel chip. The Pentium D's run hot, and so will your card, so get a Core 2 Duo. (Low end is fine) Go with a 64 bit OS, and 2 gig of ram. You could get away with one gig, but it won't save you much. A 250 gig drive will give you just over a week. (I have this exact setup) I would have gone with a 500 gig for the price vs trouble. Make sure you spend the money on a good power supply. A lot of extra watts as the card will draw a chunk.

Go with a 64 bit OS, and 2 gig of ram.

LeeSharp - did U test the 64bit configuration against the 32 one ? I'm thinkin of speeding up my configuration but till now I havent realize that this CAN help .. more deatils if U please

Using the hot rodders traditional "butt dyno" it seems faster. The core OS is faster, and you can actually recognize over 3.5 gig of ram. There are a few old benchmarks (2004 and 2005) showing 64bit mysql being significantly faster, but nothing recent, and I assume it is getting better. That all said, I have not had a chance to hammer my new 64 bit system.

As these systems typically run 24/7 , power consumption is an issue for me too . Any suggestions for a very energy efficient box that is adequate for a 4 camera setup ( motion only) on a 4 port generic BT878 30 fps card ? - Thanks

I have tested on a 1Gig VIA c3 but it was slow but will do basic modect and about 8 fps max (global)

One of the biggest power consumers is the video card. If you have no video card, that cuts power. Core2duo is also quite power friendly. Go for a very high efficiency power supply as well. Some are only %40 efficient! Last, spec your power supply closely. They are most efficient at close to full load.
