I'm submitting a bid to an apartment building for a ZM system. But they also want me to submit alternatives to ZM. I can put everything down here that I'm planning on getting for a ZM system, but suffice to say for now, it would be a new box, 4 outside cameras w/heated cases. The total for equipment alone comes to over $1700.
I did some researching and found a company named Lorex that makes monitoring systems. One of which like the one I described would come to just under $1000.
However, I have failed to find any reviews of a Lorex system.

I personally don't want to go with something I know nothing about. And I know nothing about Lorex. I have installed ZM systems, so I suggest it as the best solution. All the more so as I would be able to always service the system!

Anyhow, I'm wondering what, if anything, anyone knows about Lorex.

Never heard of Lorex, and I am in the business. Pitch them a Geovision system. A GV-800 http://www.directron.com/gv8004ch.html for real time capture.

But as far as I can tell you are proposing a video capture card. I don't see any pre-built systems there. Lorex (http://lorexstore.lorextechnology.com/) sells pre-built systems and that's what I was referring to. Also, the card you suggest seems to be only Windows based. Are there Linux drivers for it? Otherwise I would go with the Spectra8.

The Geovision cards are not Linux compatible plus they have a security chip that makes them only work with their software. Extremely proprietary. I'll call you in just a bit. Lorex is most likely all stuff made by a manufacturer and purchaced by them in bulk and rebranded. So really they are just another seller calling something their own that they have purchaced elsewhere.

I do need to be clear. Geovision is a quite good Microsoft Windows only video capture system. They are also expensive. The link was for clarification. Just Google for "Geovision systems" and you will find several. You can also try "LuxRiot" systems which is similar. However, ProVideo cards work in LuxRiot and Zoneminder. That gets interesting because the exact same hardware, and $700 for software (Windows and LuxRiot) or not.
