I currently have a Hawking Net-Vision HNC290G camera, unfortunately for me it's utter crap ...

I can only watch a streaming video on the web front end, the free-to-all jpg image (which I don't want to use) isn't even "capture-able" by zoneminder and, even though you can setup a "video port" in the settings, I have no clue how to get that to work ..

But I did see I could upgrade the firmware and I began thinking of all those nifty open-source firmware replacements for routers and such, I don't suppose there's any hope for this to come to the world of network-camera's, right?

That would be a great idea if there was any open source firmware available to start with at least. It's way out side the scope of this forum but I'm sure that it would generate interest as a seperate project. Unfortunately, I don't know of any open source firmware for IP cams unless Linksys put some out around the same time they did with their routers

But the linksys firmware don't play to nice with ZM either, so that would have to be worked on as well

Well, after a bit of hacking around with page source on the camera, I put together a string that let me change the settings using the Safari browser or FireFox:

Options are as follows:

Resolution:
0 = 640x480

Quality:
3 = Highest

Frame Rate:
30 = 30 frames per second (FPS)
25 = 25 FPS
20 = 20 FPS
15
10
5
3
1


Frequency:
60 = 60hz
50 = 50 hz
0 = "Outdoor" mode

Auto Exposure:
ON /OFF

Others are Black, White, Brightness - defaults *should* work ok, but you can tweak for your environment. For me, the defaults worked ok.

Anyhow, this thing is Linux based, we ought to be able to make a new firmware and Open Source it, RIGHT? The reason I am asking you all about this is because I have problems with my camera freezing after about 7 hours every day. The ethernet works, but the camera stops producing JPG images. VERY STRANGE. Anyone else having this problem? Have you found a fix to it besides power cycling? Firmware is already the latest version. Also I have bricked TWO of these cameras after uploading the firmware from WindowsXP using IE. Anyone else have this issue? Thanks in advance. Please post response and email.

I just opened up a wiki about the EdiMax IC-1500 IP camera if anyone is interested. We plan on getting other users to help develop a firmware or custom OS to go on it. We hope this will stop the camera from freezing and give us some extra features:

Is that legal to prevent downloading an open source program? google prevent downloading its web browser, chrome from downloading in some countries. according to that chrome is an open source program and is under BSD license, is that legal to prevent downloading?

elphel is an open hardware free firmware camera. Not cheap like linksys stuff.
