ZoneMinder Forums

I like the idea of ZONEMINDER but not much of a linux person, i have tried to run linux but 9 times out of 10 my linux install fails or fails after the installation.. (NEWB) so i stick with windows.. I run a DVR system called KGUARD that is real nice but i like what i see with ZM.

Anyone know if this has been ported? thanks..

It will most likely never be ported to windows....your best bet would be to pickup a Live CD and install from it

It probably /could/ be done, but would be a phenominal amount of work and require a lot of extra helper programs not normally installed on windows and probably be held together with the equivalent of sticky tape and string.

But I can't really see the point. I imagine most ZM boxes are dedicated servers or shared servers, and that's something for which linux is, imo, the best OS around.

Some distros are ridiculously easy to install with the livecd's now, much MUCH easier and faster than Windows to install on a new machine in most cases. Take ubuntu - stick the cd in, press enter and some regional settings. It boots to a very pretty GUI. Double-click the install icon and on most hardware, job's done. It'll install a full office suite, good browser and email tools, games, helper programs - the lot.

Have you tried the Ubuntu distributions? It is easy to set up! You just need to have the correct hardware.
Why in the world would you want to punish Zoneminder on Windows!?

1) ZoneMinder relies on kernel mode drivers to access video streams. Windows video capture is all usermode, or kernel hacks. This means getting the video is the first hurdle.

2) ZoneMinder relies on the LAMP stack. Microsoft is pushing a port of parts of this, but they are not yet fully compatible.

3) The stability of a headless Linux box surpasses the stability of a headless Windows box. Even the server product, which I know well, is not as solid.

But if you are put off, I can build you a box fully configured and ship it to you. It is easier to learn slowly.

You are so on target Lee. LAMP(ing) is really proving itself in so many circles! Since the 90's now!. There are some really good examples out there where LAMP(ing) has really shined.

My headless systems are very stable and with the Kernel mode drivers, the computers are just down right efficient. It amazes me to find a system that I ignored for weeks, just chugging along quietly.
