Problem with libz.a

Problem with libz.a
I just installed fedora core 8 and I'm trying to compile zone minder, but I keep getting the error that I am missing libz.a All of the packages that should contain libz.a are present, including zlib and mysql-devel. I have found the file located in /usr/lib. Any ideas?
