Intermintent Video outtage

Post by junior79 »

I am using ubuntu 8.0.4 and Zoneminder 1.23.3 everything seems to be working just fine execpt that ocassionaly i get blips of solid black video almost like the power or cam was unplugged for a half second then it comes back on, and most of time this triggers a record event. I cannot track this down as to what is doing this. as all cameras (7 of them) do this at least some of the time .the power supply is fine solid 13.8volts and the system is not being taxed.

anyone else ever come across this kind of problem?

What have you done so far to try to track it down?
What type of psu are you using for the cams?

I'd start off with two things, a DMM and a VCR.

The DMM should have the ability to store min/max voltages so you can place it on the circuit with the cam and turn it on, then you can go back and review the min recorded voltage at any time. It's the quickest way to find out if your supply is faulty or not.

The VCR you can place next to your server, put a tape in and plug the cam into it. You can use the composite output to loop the cam back into the server and hit record and note the time you started it so you can quickly reference the time diff and find sections easy. If you see the cam drop out on the vcr then you know to look at either the cams or their psu.

Other wise you would be looking at the capture card that is failing or maybe over heating.

Thanks for the tips I shall check this out right away and make sure that it isnt the PSU, i have a feeling it may be the card however I have also just noticed that if i click the event it comes up black then when i click still's the first 10 or so images are black and the last 6-7 are fine, also once in a while when the ZM console refreshes the video device is in RED then when i refresh it is back to green, even if the dev is in red i can still click on the stream and it will play but i wonder if that has something to do with it also? they are all ref'ed as /dev/video0 (0) 0 through 6

I would probably still do the above just as a sanity check but that tidbit of info sounds more towards the capture card or its driver failing.

Check your system logs and run dmesg, if the driver is having issues it usually shows up in one if not both. for some reason the dmesg log file does not always show the same things that running dmesg from the command line does so always refer to the dmesg from the command line as it will have any extra info after the machine boots.

Okay so the good news is this card can work in linux as you are able to get video from it.

The bad news is that V4L has no idea of what driver to use for it and is using a generic driver. You will have to try to find out what driver to use.
You can use:
scanpci -v

to get more information on the card, then use this ("CardVendor 0x0070 card 0x13eb" or " vendor 0x109e device 0x036e" for example) information in google to see if someone has found the correct device number to modprobe the correct driver.
Or attempt to find your card in this long list at link.
Otherwise you will have to go through each device number to find what works, what don't, then figure out what works best.

ok thanks i shall do some research on that to hopefully make things happier, on the upside i delte all my cameras and readded them and the problem "seems" to have gone away in the recording the b lips are still in the live views but no tin the recordeing UNTILL i change the resolution from 320x240 to anythign else then i start getting errors untill i make sure every cam is 320x240 and restart zoneminder.

thanks for the help much appreciated

Just make sure to update this tread with your findings as I am now curious as well.
Would also be useful if you post the pciscan results for the card here and I can try to help some with the Google searches.

Also going to move this tread to the hardware queries section of the forum shortly.

[RANT]
Glad to see that Ubuntu is always making things easier
Wonder what their reasoning is for omitting one of the most common tools.

We can get most of the same info through lspci I just hate it as it replaces the description with the ID codes so you can't have both so it makes you have to think a bit harder than should be required and type twice as much or more unless I'm missing something.
[/RANT]

lspci -vn -s 03:08.0

The rest should all be the same, but can't say for sure as I have never used lspci for this because of it's short comings.
lspci -vn -s 03:09.0
lspci -vn -s 03:0a.0
lspci -vn -s 03:0b.0
lspci -vn -s 03:0c.0
lspci -vn -s 03:0d.0
lspci -vn -s 03:0e.0
lspci -vn -s 03:0f.0

Or you can do lspci -vn and it shows everything without the descriptions, still really annoying. Although I'm not sure it will get the info we really need.
