I have two locations to monitor in separate buildings. Each of them has a Gentoo desktop on the same local network. I was planning on having each of these systems record their videos and send a copy to the other system. That way I would always have two copies of all videos, and I can wget what I need from over the internet if I need to review something. I don't really need to do live monitoring.

Someone suggested I use zoneminder but I'm wondering if it might be overkill?

Does anyone have an opinion on this?

sounds like ZM could be perfect for you .. very powerful and robust yet easy to use for set it and forget it applications.
