Hello everyone,
this is my 1st post in the forum.

I'm trying to install zoneminder on Ubuntu 8.04.

Here's what I did:

1) sudo apt-get install zoneminder => everything went fine but my camera was always in red so I coulnd't monitor it.

2) I uninstalled zoneminder and tried to install latest stable version from source but it didn't work, so I uninstalled it.

3) now, I'm trying to install it with apt-get again but it doesn't work; here's the result of "sudo apt-get install zoneminder":
xavier@WaterTowerServ1:~$ sudo apt-get install zoneminder

It looks like its running which is why you cannot re install... as for the red screen you will need to explain more about your hardware, there is a version in the repos for Hardy that works fine.

Looks like zm installed fine but is erroring out on setting up the database because the user and DB already exist in mysql. You will have to either change the user and password to what you have loaded in mysql or drop the user and enter a new one. Same for the database, you will likely need to drop it and manually load the DB.

As for your red links, check your logs and see what errors are there.

Ok, I could reinstall using "apt-get install zoneminder", it was a zoneminder process called at boot that I had to delete before being able to reinstall...

Now I'm back with my problem of the source displayed in red.
When I go to see the logs in /var/log/message, here's what I have:

I slowly find solutions...

I had to edit /etc/sysctl.conf
and add:

kernel.shmall=268424446
kernel.shmmax=268424446

After a reboot, the source line now turns orange...
I keep investigating...
:wink:

ok... :roll: sounds like orange is a nice color :D

What let me thought it wasn't is that when I click on the camera's zone I get a red cross in IE and a broken link in Firefox in stead of the image.

When I went to apache's log, I see that it can't find the picture in
/usr/share/zoneminder/images
I've seen somewhere that I have to change the rights on this folder for the user www-data and put read and write permissions... :?

I still have to look...

Thanks if you can help...

Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 8.04 server (kernal 2.6.24-21-server), zoneminder, LAMP, ffmeg, all from the repos. Did not get any images from camera in zoneminder, but could see camera in xawtv. Then applied the fixes listed on the Wiki Documentation page for zoneminder. Look at the section titled "Installation from a .deb" I did them all with the exception of the last item about memory allocation. When I first installed the server and zoneminder, the first thing I did was the memory adjustment. Did not work, tried a few other things. Then decided to re-read the documentation carefully rather than skimming. Removed all applications related to zoneminder (apt-get remove --purge <application>). Then reinstalled and followed the Documentation referenced above.

Everthing now works great. Zonemider sees my camera on video0, channel 0.

Hope this helps.

Hardy is very unstable, and the repos are way out of date. Peter is the guy that makes the debs for Debian, so use his current ones, and use Gutsy. I can't say for Intrepid yet.
