Hi,

Thanks to Philip and Fernado for your advice back in November with regard to the image brightness fluctuations. It was a hardware issue and once I had all four cameras connected, ZM 0.9.15 ran happily under SuSE8.2. Well, ran is a misnomer - it was struggling on a Pentium 450MZ with 192 MB of RAM and only 2GB of total disk spacae. I therefore built a new machine (Athlon XP2000, 512MB RAM, 80GB disk), installed SusE8.2 and tried to install the (then) current version of ZoneMinder, 1.17.1. It all appeared to configure, make and install OK but I could not get any images in the watch windows. I did a complete uninstall then re-installed 0.9.15 - same result. I've just downloaded 1.17.2 - same result. Putting the card (a GrandTec MultiCapture - four input on a BT878) back in the old PC and checking various logs appears to suggest that the capture daemon is not staying up on the new PC.

I can run xawtv and see all four channels OK in the new PC and when I run zmu -d 0 -q -v it also sees the card OK. Obviously I've done something silly when setting up SuSE8.2 on the new PC but I can't figure out what. I've attached various logs which may help - this is frustrating as it did work on the old PC and it really is a brilliant piece of software!

Thanks for the very extensive report!

A couple of other things to check. Firstly, it seems that you only have one zmc running, does your card share the different cameras on different channels of the same device? I assume that is the case. Secondly check in /var/log/messages as that is where zmc will report it's errors. On some distros they actually get written to a different file in /var/log so grep for ERR in all files if you don't find anything in messages. Finally I notice your monitor appears to be called 'Front door', it might be worth changing this to 'FrontDoor' (no spaces) to avoid potential problems in the future.

Thanks for the very prompt response. Yes, there is only one copy of zmc running - this was also the case on the old PC. With regard to the 'Front door' - I had notice this issue in a previous thread but I haven;t had any problems with this name on the old PC so I assume it is not a problem under SuSE.

I've had a look in the messages file and attach the chunk corresponding to the other data sent earlier. I notice that zmc appears to start OK, loads the monotor and its (default) zone. Zma also appears to start OK and read the zone information correctly but when zms starts it reports no zone - is this correct.

It looks strange to me that there aren't any errors here. Can you check and make sure that no other file in /var/log contains any ERR strings?

Further to my previous postings, I’ve uninstalled Zoneminder, dropped the ZM tables from MySQL, uninstalled MySQL, reinstalled MySQL, configured and built ZM 1.18.1 but I still have no image in the watch window. I’ve had a good GREP round but the only place the messages seem to be going to is /var/log/messages – the relevant part is appended, as is the corresponding entry from zmpkg.log.

The capture daemon seems to load and stay up OK (started at 20:38:50), the analysis daemon also starts at the same time. However, the messages log indicates that it is wating for the cature daemon – with a WARmessage. I shut the ZM processes down at 20:39:20. Any clues? xawtv sees all four channels on the card OK (GranTec MultiCapture, using a single BT878 chip, SuSE 8.2).

Using 'top' can you tell if your zmc processes are using any processor time or are they just stuck in a sleep or something and using no resource?

Good guess - I've attached relevant parts of the optput from top on the old system (P450, SuSE 8.2, ZM 0.9.15 - all working OK) and the new system (Athlon XP2000, SuSe 8.2, ZM 1.18.1 - not capturing) and it seems that, as you suspected, all the zm processes are just sitting in sleep mode. As I mentioned previously, as far as I am aware, the Linux setup is identical on both machines. xawtv can see all four channels on the new machine OK so I am totally at a loss - so near to working . . .
