BSD Port

Post by rjfjohnson »

Hi guys,

All of our servers run FreeBSD (6.2 or 7) and I was wondering what the process of installing ZoneMinder is. I know that there is a port for 1.23, is there one out yet for 1.24? I did a search but couldnt find anything.

Thanks in advance

Hello ryan did you manage to get zoneminder working with freebsd? what capture card? cameras ect? I tried but the hack for v4l1 was bad and v4l2 was worse. BSD would be my first choice for an OS but i could not make zoneminder work, there is a port now? maybe i should try again?

Hey there,

Im not sure - I haven't had the time to be able to try, I looked breifly at what was involved in porting 1.23 and it wasn't "easy". I figure 1.24 would be just as involved if not more so.

Because our servers are mostly in production, changing them really isnt an option.

Also - I am using IP cameras = no capture cards.

Hate to bug, but we really need surveilance going as soon as possible.

Its probably not kosher to mention it on here, but are there ZoneMinder alternatives I could look into in the mean time?

This does not solve your Freebsb problem, but if you really need something going right away I can offer Hosted VPS Zoneminder servers with full root access and static ip's. This would allow you to keep your production servers in place and have the option for remote Zoneminder servers inside dedicated Co-location servers.

You can take a look at a live dedicated demo and try out your camera's on it if you want. The demo is running 1.24.0 at the moment and will be upgraded to fix some of the recent bugs. See if it suits your needs and we can go from there. Log in with test/test and you will be able to edit a couple monitors.

Not being someone who is much more than aware of what FreeBSD is, I can't tell you exactly how to go about getting ZM-1.24 up and running on FreeBSD. The process for various Linux based OS's is pretty much the same, albeit as different as the distros themselves are since all have their own quirks.

As simple as I can put it, ensure that you have whatever perl dependencies are required, get ffmpeg installed and running and then install ZoneMinder. Whether you use prebuilt packages or build from source all depends on what is available. At this point in time it's a safe bet that you'll be building and installing ZM-1.24 from source. Don't let any of this deter you. If I can do it, anybody can.

Unfortunately BSD is not as simple as the libraries are very different as rjfjohnson is already aware. It's more of a unix OS.

You might be able to get 1.24 running on FreeBSD by just doing a diff of 1.23.3 and the FreeBSD port of that and then applying the same changes to 1.24 and following the FreeBSD guide thread.
