I have done some experiences with events storage. I'm a newbee with jpeg and movie compression.

is mpeg-4 more compressible than just a lot of jpeg files in an event ?
what zoneminder's users usually do with event images ? Do they stay the events just as jpeg files or it's normal to convert to a movie in avi, mpeg and so on ?

This is the first part of my experiments:

First I set up my camera with 320x240 resolution. I changed the default value for ZM_JPEG_FILE_QUALITY from 70 to 100.
I also changed the function to modect and put an area to monitor movements.

I saw the files from the movements I did in front of the camera took an average of 77KB each jpeg file.
I also did the same with a quality of 50 and the files took 10KB in avg with the same resolution.

Now I'm going to try with different resolutions and jpeg qualities. I think it would help anybody who want to know how much space is required for an specific condition.

Files stay as jpegs for the life of the event.
You can find and spreadsheet in the wiki to calculate how much space is required for for overall storage requirements. I think it's in the FAQ maybe.
