ZoneDVR - a rebranded Zoneminder product

Post by timcraig »

I came across this page and found it interesting.

http://www.zonedvr.com/

Looks like they sell systems with Zoneminder renamed to ZoneDVR. From the video you can see it's running Zoneminder 1.22.3 with a ZoneDVR Model LS-2400 logo added to the top of the Zoneminder console. The video goes on to show all the features of Zoneminder (while calling it ZoneDVR).

Branding aside, the video is a nice demonstration of Zoneminder's features for new users.

Woohoo.

Yeah for someone who is trying to make money on Phil's hard work. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume they aren't paying royalties or making donations.

Maybe not. Probably not.
I wonder too if he is donating to Linus. And Richard (RMS). And the Apache foundation. And the mysql team (Sun Microsystems now). And more other hackers than anyone could list. And the distro developers who packaged up all the software he is using.

Just trying to add a little perspective here. We are all using other peoples hard work every day. I cant remember the exact figure but I read some time back that the value of the software in a typical linux distro is millions. And as long as we adhere to the terms of the licenses we are free to try to make some money with it. It's not that easy to do. :(

And mostly the licenses basically say that if we distribute the software we have to make the source code available. I'm not advocating being a leech. Hopefully we can all be contributing members of this and the wider free software community. Maybe this guys contibution will be showing us how to make a living :)

I actually hope the guy makes a few million. Maybe Phil will get some cash if he does. But I dont think it likely that he made anything but a video. There's no storefront there. Just a phone number.

It's late. Enough rambling. G'night all.

I don't have a problem if he wants to throw money our way but no worries if he doesn't. He has made quite a neat little video there so if he just wanted to donate a more generic presentation that has a little less emphasis on package deliveries ( ) then I would be cool with that!
