Hi I have been running zoneminder 1.22.3 which was installed from a repository on ubuntu hardy server distro. I would like to upgrade to 1.24.
However when I attempted it once before I could not get zoneminder to run and I was unable to reinstall the earlier version. I had to reinstall ubuntu and start again. I would appreciate help with this. I have used linux for a while now and dont mind installing from source with a "walk through", I am new to zoneminder and know nothing about php or mysql. But happy to learn and try anything.

There are plenty of walk throughs in the wiki, Just skip the bit about installing the database. When your trough, look up the bit in the documentation on upgrading the database.

The guides are good for 32 bit installs,but none of them mention 64 bit. There are changes to ./configure for ffmpeg as well as zoneminder, but the wiki and the forums only hint at what they might be. Any help here would be much appreciated. Running Ubuntu 8.10-64 on a dual quadcore 16 gig server board. zoneminder 1.23-3 installed from repository.
