I am going to be installing 1.24.1 on a new machine this evening and I am wondering what the best bang for the buck would be. I have been trying to research if 1.24.1 will work better on a 64-bit kernel or even better on one distro vs another but nothing is very conclusive. Does anyone have any suggestions? I want to get as many modect cameras out of this box as possible :)

TIA!!!

Depends on the box not on the program. Got a dual quad core with 16 gig of mem....runs 64 bit and as many cams as you can stack on it On the other hand my other machine is a fast single processor and does well with 32 bit and 4 cams running 640X480 and 15fps. That is about all it wants to do, real time processing of large pics is very processor intensive.

So there is no performance difference between 32 and 64 bit linux when it comes to running zoneminder, given equal hardware?

you cannot run 64 bit on a 32 bit processor..64 bit is generally better at handling data processing tasks if the hardware is compatable. bigger bite ,same apple. If you are going to use more than 4 gig of memory you must use 64 bit as 32 bit will not address more than 4 gig. it is more a hardware issue than a "speed" issue.

Okay, I dont' think I am being clear. Let's take two identical boxes both capable of running 64-bit and each having let's say 2gb of ram. On one box I install a 64-bit flavor of linux and the other I install the 32-bit flavor of the same distribution. All things being equal, same software revs, same hardware, same nic, everything, hardware aside, which will perform better with zoneminder?

with 2 gig of ram the 32 bit box will outperform the 64 bit one. Nothing to do with Zoneminder, has to do with pointer sixe and other things. Not a big difference though
