FPS too low and changing frequently

Hi,

I have a ZM server based on a P4 1.7Ghz with 512Mb of ram.
It has 2 cameras (USB Creative Live!). One runs at 640x480 5fps stable(monitor) and the second one is set at the same resolution but the FPS varies between 10 to 20fps (motion detection).

The loadq is 0.90 while the CPU usage is 42%.
34.3%us, 0.7%sy, 0.0%ni, 58.5%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 6.5%si, 0.0%st

Is it normal that one has much lower FPS than the other one ? Are these stats consistent with the hardware and usage ? I find that the load is high for that type of usage, do you agree ?

What can I do to improve the FPS ?

I have noticed most of you seem to be using a low fps. I'm trying to get a high one since low FPS gives me blurry pictures and faces are not recognizable. Are there other way to make the jpgs clearer in low fps situations ? (beside increasing the quality factor)

Thanks,

Chandi

I am not going to pretend to know much but I would look in to the memory
requirement because 512mb seems to low. See if you can run only one
camera and see the picture improve.

Actually I now have 768mb of ram, the maximum the Motherboard can support.

Code: Select all

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 774308 766760 7548 0 50620 380644
-/+ buffers/cache: 335496 438812
Swap: 1004052 676 1003376
Since cached and buffers seem to be high I would not think this would be the problem. Unless I should add more shared memory for ZM ??
