Accessing web interface remotely via Apaches ProxyPass

Hello
I have separate Apache webserver and a separate ZM server on my lan.
The ZM server works flawlessly when accessed locally via local IP.
I have set up Apache server to forward requests to zm.mywebsite.com to the local ZM server, this works fine and shows the login page, but no login details are accepted - no error shown just reshows the login page.
That is unless I change ZM_AUTH_TYPE from builtin to remote. But then anyone can login if they take a guess at a valid username as it does not require a password.
Is there a way around this by staying within ZM? I am aware that I could use .htaccess but would rather stick with the ZM login page?
Thankyou
Jason
