All cameras not working - but fixed

Hi,
I upgraded 1.23.3 with 1.24.1 from the package on the zoneminder.bluecherry.net jaunty repository using the upgrade feature of Synaptic. All went well with all cameras working and events being recorded. No problem. Then yesterday I logged into ZM and found all cameras down, the sources all red on the main index page. I tried things like shutting zm down and re-starting, re-booting the server, changing source settings and saving and nothing worked so I thought permissions. From terminal I executed sudo chmod 4755 /usr/bin/zmfix and then zmfix -a. Then I shut down and re-started ZM. Now all cameras are back up and working. The server is dedicated to ZM so there is nothing going on in there that should change the permissions. What happened here?
