ubuntu upgrade howto

Hi there
I wonder if someone could post steps to provide a simple upgrade process from version
1.22.3 to 1.24.x on a ubuntu hardy 64bit system,
I am having terrible problems and there does not seem to be a simple method for this anywhere!
