can't initialize hard drives

I had a DVR setup previously with a gay grub based dvr OS that was WAY too limited and wouldn't even allow you to bring up a console or boot into single user mode or anything.... it sucked. so the NIC died on my motherboard and rather than buy a new 200 dollar board to keep a crappy ROM OS that won't let me change drivers I decided to just put in a PCI NIC and upgrade to OS and my hard drives while I'm at it.

I have two SATA 200GB drives that can be identified by model and everything if I type dmesg but if I try to install from the live cd (click the star button and then go to the drive/partition manager) it can't find any hard drives... how do I get them working. I'm fairly new to linux I have some experience in C++ and ubuntu if that means anything and I'm very fluent with the windows OS but when it comes to linux if the hardware doesn't just identify and install by itself then I'm lost

thanks!

which live cd are you referring to

if its the original ZMLive cd
it will not work on new hardware

also if hard drives are not detected its the SATA or Pata controller not the drives

Use http://www.isentrix.com/pub/zoneminder/ ... x/ZMLarch/

yes it will work with most new hardware
the one you have has a very old kernel (driver set) with it.

also as a side note the same guy rdmelin made both of those live cds
